Jon’s first rainbow trout.

When I ask my first son Jon what is his favorite fish, he would answer “rainbow trout … although I never caught one…” Now he can finally state his favorite fish, knowing he caught one by himself. I took the kids up to the Blue River to throw out the first trout line of the season. It was still a little cold for kids, so we only fished for a couple of hours and spent the rest of the day pretend camping by eating lunch outdoors and making hot chocolate & coffee at the back of the truck. Our younger son was more interested in exploring the surroundings and jumping around in the patches of snow (and me following him around so I can pick up the fly rod where he dumped it). Jon had several takes but it took him little while to get the timing right. We caught a few fish, some browns & rainbow. Jon caught the rainbow by himself, nymphing with an indicator. Fish or no fish, it’s great watching kids enjoying their time just being near a creek … a reminder that we should appreciate the surroundings when we fish. Today was a fun day for all of us, and a very special day for my son Jon… catching his first trout on the fly rod. As soon as spring warms up, we’ll be back in waders for some serious fishing (and more serious running around).

오늘은 우리 첮쩨 놈이 처음으로 혼자 fly rod 로 레인보우를 잡았습니다. 함께 있어서, 뜻깊은 날입니다.

  1. Hank! Good to hear from you. Yes, that is the plan ... I just bought the wife a nice Simms wader and showing her pictures of spas & fishing lodges. All part of the masterplan ;-)

  5. Nice. Rainbows are my favorite too.

My wife has come out with me a few times. She never really seemed to enjoy it that much, so one time I hired a young, Argentinian guide who was in Oregon for the summer. He stood next to her the whole day, tying her files on, pointing to holds, helping her as she waded, and telling her all about how beautiful it is in Argentina. She even caught a fish or two. Afterwards she said she really enjoyed fishing and could "maybe get into it." :)

  8. Perfect! Share the love. Wisconsins a great place to give people the sport. I remember my wife's first trout and how she had been begging me to keep a fish and when she finally caught one she wanted to let it go. The circle continues.......
