Pyeongchang County Trout Festival.
Every winter from end of December to end of January, Pyeongchang County in Eastern Korea opens it Winter Trout Festival. This is a month long event that draws over a million people each year. There’s a whole lot of snow fun & activities and certainly a whole lot of trout catching & cooking. All of the trout are farm raised trout and they section off a giant part of the river to allow for ice fishing (in some spots they have line fishing) and other winter activities. There’s a host of programs available for the family and there a pretty expansive network of accommodations families can enjoy. There are some education programs for kids about environmental issues and about trout lifecycles. However in the end, this is primarily a family oriented event focused on good times, good eating, and good quality family time. More information available through the Pyeongchang County link (http://www.happy700.or.kr). The county merchants makes a buck, the families have frenzied fun in the snow, and the county promotes what they have to offer in other seasons, everyone wins. Everyone’s happy except the millions of trout that gets cooked.
