I was at my mom’s in northern CA about forty minutes south of San Francisco as a regular visit, and didn’t find much chance to go out to fish because there were too many planned trip to Home Depot and not easy access to fishing. One morning, I decided to do a quick jogging around the flood channel that neighborhood and I happened to see more water in the area than usual. About the time I started to get some sweat, I saw water moving in a strange pattern: I suppose, ever since I started to do fly fishing, I acquired a bad habit of looking at any water comes in my site whether I am walking or driving. At first, I thought it was a spring coming out of ground or duck swimming under water for looking for food. I saw a large fish in there swimming! I remember that location is often full of dry long standing weeds and several family of hiding ducks from big birds that looking for the food. Since it was getting dark, I did thought of coming back next day to throw a line or two to see what kind of feedback I get, but walking out of that area, I saw a large sign said “No fishing and No swimming.” Next day, I know I have to fly out back to Seoul, so I decided to let that big fish go for now.
Organization of fly boxes is a mind boggling, never ending, and ultimately impossible thing to achieve. Sort by seasons, by locations, by sizes, by species, so on… it all makes sense and it all doesn’t at some point on the water. Lean & effective sets, plentiful and all encompassing sets, and then the sets that have a lot of flies but nothing useful sets…my head hurts from this. See the boxes people put out there…
Entomology is the scientific study of insects. At some 1.3 million described species, insects account for more than two-thirds of all known organisms, date back some 400 million years, and have many kinds of interactions with humans and other forms of life on earth. Entomology is rooted in nearly all human cultures from prehistoric times, primarily in the context of agriculture, but scientific study began only as recently as the 16th century. The list of entomologists through recorded history is enormous, and includes such notable figures as Charles Darwin, Vladimir Nabokov, Karl von Frisch, and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner E. O. Wilson.
Mayflies are insects which belong to the Order Ephemeroptera (from the Greek ephemeros = "short-lived", pteron = "wing", referring to the short life span of adults). They have been placed into an ancient group of insects termed the Palaeoptera, which also contains dragonflies and damselflies. They are aquatic insects whose immature stage (called naiad or, colloquially, nymph) usually lasts one year in freshwater. The adults are short-lived, from a few minutes to a few days depending on the species. About 2,500 species are known worldwide, including about 630 species in North America.
Common names for mayflies include "dayfly", "shadfly", "Green Bay Flies", "Canadian soldier", "lake fly", and "fishfly". The mayfly belongs to group 1 taxa, or pollution–sensitive animals. This means if mayflies are in or around the water, the water should be of a good quality.
Caddisflies, sedge-flies or rail flies (Order Trichoptera, from Greek trich, "hair", and ptera, "wings") are small moth-like insects having two pairs of hairy membranous wings. They are closely related to Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) which have scales on their wings, and the two orders together form the superorder Amphiesmenoptera. Caddisflies have aquatic larvae and are found in a wide variety of habitats such as streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, spring seeps, and temporary waters (vernal pools). The larvae of many species make protective cases of silk decorated with gravel, sand, twigs or other debris.
Plecoptera are an order of insects, commonly known as stoneflies. There are some 1,700 recorded species worldwide, and new ones are still being discovered. Stoneflies are believed to be one of the most primitive groups of Neoptera, with close relatives identified from the Carboniferous and Lower Permian geological periods, while true stoneflies are known from fossils only a bit younger. The modern diversity however apparently is of Mesozoic origin. Plecoptera are found in both the Southern and Northern hemispheres, and the populations are quite distinct although the evolutionary evidence suggests that species may have crossed the equator on a number of occasions before once again becoming geographically isolated. All species of Plecoptera are intolerant of water pollution and their presence in a stream or still water is usually an indicator of good or excellent water quality.

Each spring the Illinois DNR stocks 43 locations throughout IL with more than 60,000 rainbow trout. This kicks off the 2009 spring trout fishing season at 5 a.m. on Saturday, April 4. I know the stocked locations get bombarded with fisherman this day (and for that week) but I strolled over to a local lake to check out what was happening. I guess part of the fun is watching the fisherman crowded up at the banks, all trying to catch trout. Even on opening day, you will be surprised how quiet it can get, if you do a little walking into the woods, and away from the crowd. I did that, and found myself a little spot that I can stand and roll cast from. I found that the biggest challenge of fishing for trout in these waters was trying to avoid catching bluegills, which seemed to like all the flies that a trout might like. I fished for only about an hour and a half, caught several bluegills and a couple of smaller trout. This day, I felt thankful to the IDNR for making this possible. No matter how crowded it gets, it’s nice to be able to catch & see a trout 15 minutes away from my home.
